Fremont teen idols shine
On Friday, February 27, finalists of the Fremont Teen Talent Showcase will be performing at the Fremont Teen Center. This is the fourth year of the talent competition, supported by the Fremont Youth Advisory Commission (YAC) and the City of Fremont Parks and Recreation Department.
During the two Semifinal Nights, solo singers and bands with diverse styles sang and played their instruments before a judging panel composed of teens on the YAC as well as experienced musicians from the local area. The selected finalists will compete for a chance to win bragging rights, cash prizes, and gift cards donated by local businesses such as Allegro Music.
In addition, bands and solo singers may be offered opportunities to perform in future city events and other venues. And judges often provide good advice for teens who hope to improve their singing.
"Some people [performers] have been around in the talent circuit and have performed many times, and then some people - it's their very first time," said Rena Dein, City of Fremont Recreation Supervisor. "We get everyone from shower singers to those who have been taking voice lessons for...six years."
Though most competitors are from Fremont, registration was open to all teens. All solo singers are aged 11 to 19, while it was required that more than half of the members of each band meet that age requirement as well.
The semifinals included musicians of many styles and experience levels, and the final showcase will include the "best of both nights," said Dein.
"They've [the performers] got that spark, they've got that energy, and they are excited to perform in front of an audience," said Dein. And every year, the final showcase has been different, based on the unique performances that local talents have got to offer.
"We'd love to have people who'd just like to see talented teens come out," said Dein.
All money earned from ticket sales will go toward Fremont teen programs.
