Steven Fanua, a student at Milpitas High School, varsity linebacker for the Trojans, set to graduate this year, was recognized at the February 17 city council. He recently signed a full five-year scholarship to play football for the University of California at Berkeley.
"It is truly a significant accomplishment for him" Mayor Livengood said. The mayor said he was impressed, "It doesn't happen to a lot of people, obviously. Cal Football is a very high powered program, when they recruit you and sign you it is a testament of the talent of the player."
Mayor Livengood described Fanua as a role model: An active force in his church and academically as well as athletically talented.
The mayor invited Fanua to be recognized for his accomplishment. The city appreciates young people who set an example for other young people to follow Livengood announced. The mayor proclaimed "On behalf of the city council we want to congratulate you on your scholarship. We look forward to going up and watching you play."
Fanua said that "this is a very humbling experience. " He thanked the city of Milpitas, Mayor Livengood, Coach Victor Parrette (Coach Vic) and Coach King, the King Family, and the Fanua family, without whom he could not have done it.
