Adoption of a new waste diversion goal
As part of the California Integrated Waste Management Act of 1989, Newark has met its required waste diversion goal, to divert 50 percent of its waste from landfills, and is currently at 68 percent. The new goal is to divert 75 percent of waste from landfills by 2015.

Allocation of CDBG jurisdiction improvement project funds
The City's Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds for 2009-2010 are proposed to be allocated into three primary categories: General Administration ($7800), Housing Rehabilitation ($56,864) and Jurisdiction Improvement Projects ($153,534). Specific projects funds proposed include replacing the roof of the Headstart building ($35,000), removing the concrete structure at Kidango preschool ($16,000), the Housing Rehabilitation Fund ($45,000) and the Site Acquisition Fund ($57,534).

Approval and permission to submit Draft Housing Element Update
Newark is required to update its General Plan Housing Elements by mid-2009. The City Council hired Spangle Associates in July to update this document, and a draft is now ready to be submitted to the State Department of Housing and Community Development. Details regarding this draft have been previously made available to the public through community meetings and are also available through the City of Newark, (510) 578-4000.
