Fifth graders Dwayne Bhatia, Harman Brah, Nihal Maunder, Anirudh Prabhu, Shivam Parikh, and Shivane Sabharwal from Gomes Elementary School won an Alliance Award and Teamwork Award at the FIRST Lego League State Championship held on January 25th at Newark Memorial High School. The team was coached by Deepak Sabharwal.
This event is one of the top 10 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programs according to Dean Davis, Educational Outreach Deputy Director at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). The Lego League had a record season with 13,705 teams participating in 42 countries around the world.
During pre-qualification for the state tournament held on Jan. 3, 2009, the team was recognized for outstanding research and won the Climate Project award. The team focused on the current drought in California for their research project and met with ACWD staff (Alameda County Water District) to learn about the problem, visited Newark's Ohlone College campus to learn about a local leader in the area of rainwater conservation and spoke with Prof. Rahaman of Ohlone College to refine their research.
The teamwork award was especially significant considering that Gomes Elementary School has adopted the theme of "TEAM Gomes" throughout this academic year.
