Chabot basketball week in review
By Ankita Chhabra
Chabot men's basketball hit a bump in the road last week, halting their streak of three wins with consecutive losses: Wednesday, Jan. 28, against San Francisco City College, 81-64; and then to Las Positas, 78-70, on Saturday, Jan. 31.
Despite the two losses, Chabot Head Coach Denny Aye was content with his team's performance, and feels his team will right the ship.
"All together, we have improved in the last two weeks as a team, offensively and defensively," said Coach Aye.
Coach Aye's Gladiators of Chabot College will next take the court at home, against Foothill College, Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m.
The scoreboard might have set back the Gladiators, but their record is still looking strong. They currently sport a 4-3 in conference record; and 16-11 overall.
"We played hard, but just couldn't pull through", said freshmen guard Derrick Bruce, who put up 21 points in the loss to Los Positas. Another freshmen guard, Mark Stevenson, put up 17 points. The Gladiators held a 9 point halftime lead, 44-35, but fell short in the end, due to turnovers that ultimately cost them the game.
On the other side of the court, points were up by guards Willie Richardson (18), Marc Traylor (14) and Joe Faumuina (13).
The Lady Gladiators didn't have much better luck in their contests throughout the week, either.
Playing San Jose City College for the first time this season, Chabot came out strong from the beginning, as they got themselves a lead at the end of the first half. Despite a strong fight put on by the Lady Jaguars of SJCC, Chabot was able to hold on for the victory, 64-58.
Chabot's second game of the week, against San Francisco City College, resulted in another loss, 72-58, on Friday, Jan. 30. Both Rose Thompson (18) and Dessirae Cafferata (12), who are both hobbled by ankle injuries suffered in their January 16 contest against Foothill, led the way for the Lady Gladiators.
Next up for Chabot women's basketball is a 5:30 p.m. tip off on their home court against Las Positas on Wednesday, Feb. 4, followed by a road game against San Mateo on Friday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m.
