Union City Teen Idol 2009 Open Auditions Over
By Simon Wong
Open auditions for Union City's second annual Teen Idol Competition are now over. The William C. May Jr. Teen Center at 1200 J Street, Union City was the venue for thirteen more contestants on January 23.
This week, Jumoke Hill, organizer of the City's Teen Idol Competition, Youth Commissioner Yessenia Palomino and guest judge Crystal Garcia assessed the performances.
All entrants were from the Tri-City area with the exception of singer Annelise Wood who travelled from Livermore. Singer Gayathri Ramanathan delivered a vocal performance from a Bollywood film and dancer Akhshaya Baskar treated the judges to an expressive routine. Both teenagers are from Fremont. Both also made it to Round Two of the Competition.
Unfortunately, not all of the original participants were fortunate enough to be invited back. "I have to be honest with them," said Jumoke Hill, "but really dislike having to tell them that they will not go on to the next round." It was clear that some very difficult decisions had to be made. Nevertheless, the verdicts were always considered and respectful. As always, the judging panel offered constructive criticism and sound advice, giving credit where it was due.
Interestingly, some contestants heard about the Union City Teen Idol via a number of media - the Internet, the Tri-City Voice Newspaper, word of mouth and flyers.
A total of fifteen performers have a week to prepare for Round Two on Friday, January 30, 2009. Proceedings will start at 4 p.m. at the Teen Center. Vocalists will be allowed to perform to an instrumental accompaniment. This was not permitted during the open auditions so that voices could be heard clearly.
Finalists will compete for the title of Union City Teen Idol 2009 on Friday, February 6, 2009 at 6 p.m.. Prizes are an IPOD, an IPOD shuffle and a $40 iTunes Gift Card.
