Newark Memorial finishes second at Albany Invitational

The Newark Memorial Cougars placed second out of 40 teams at the 36th Annual Albany Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 24. Will C. Wood took home the team title with 161 points to Newark's 148. Dublin was third with 131 and De La Salle finished fourth with 122 points.
The Cougars had two individual champions: 127-pound Albert Young won his first tournament of the year with a major decision in the finals; and 137-pound freshman Victor Pereira earned three pins and a technical fall to reach the finals. Pereira scored an 8-0 major decision in the finals to take home the title.
Sophomore 287-pounder Steven Maradona, in his first varsity tournament, earned second place. At 191 pounds, Milo Anderson scored a takedown as time was ending to place third. Dennis Nguyen was fourth at 147 pounds; Tung Le sixth at 105; and David Peixoto, seventh at 173. |
