CSD has productive week

By Giovanni Albanese Jr.

Both the girls and boys basketball teams for the California School for the Deaf had a successful week of play, culminating in third place finishes at the Ninth Annual Clerc Classic hosted by the Maryland School for the Deaf.

Before traveling to Maryland to participate in the three-day tournament, both teams had warm-up contests against Oakland Military Institute: girls on Monday, Jan. 12; boys the following day.

The girls won their match with OMI convincingly, 58-40; and the boys, while experiencing more of a challenge, were able to nab a victory, 55-53.

Both teams left for Maryland on January 14, and began play at the Ninth Annual Clerc Classic the following day: boys against Model; girls versus Ohio. The boys were able to advance to the winner's side of the bracket by handing Model School for the Deaf a 43-31 defeat. CSD's girls team was also able to advance to the winner's bracket with a tight victory over Ohio School for the Deaf, 37-33.

On January 16, both the boys and girls were matched up against the host school of the tournament, Maryland School for the Deaf. The boys were involved in a lopsided affair, victims of an 18-point drubbing by Maryland, 59-31. The girls, however, gave all they could to Maryland, coming back from a nine-point deficit to send the game into overtime, only to end up with the loss, 46-45.

January 17 was the final day of the tournament, which saw California School for the Deaf - both boys and girls - battling it out for a third-place finish. And both teams were able to do just that. Indiana School for the Deaf was the girls opponent; Texas School for the Deaf was the boys opponent.

The girls prevailed in their third-place game, defeating Indiana by a bucket, 41-39; and the boys were also able to grab a third-place finish, defeating Texas, 54-48, thanks in large part to a 21-12 final quarter. Indiana eventually won the boys title, while Model won on the girls bracket.

Next up for both teams are Bay Counties League games against Cornerstone Christian, at the CSD campus, on Wednesday, Jan. 21, and Chinese Christian (boys home, girls away) on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
