Newark Memorial boys get top-five finish
Submitted By Timothy S. Hess
Newark Memorial boys wrestling competed in the two-day, 65-team Big Valley Classic wrestling invitational held at the Stockton Arena on Friday, Jan. 9, and Saturday, Jan. 10, and finished in fifth place.
The Cougars were led by 125-pound senior Albert Young and 130-pound freshman Victor Pereira.
Young bounced back with two pins after his semifinal loss to finish third; Pereira lost to Mike Gutierrez of Livingston in the quarterfinals, but responded from that setback with a pin and two technical falls to make it to the third place match. Pereira faced Gutierrez again, but this time dominated the match before pinning him and taking home third place.
Heavyweight Greig O'Connor was 4-2 with two pins at the tournament and ended up in fifth place; and 189-pound Milo Anderson finished eighth for the Cougars.
