Hayward Area boys soccer season kicks off
By Tony Cogley
Hayward Area Athletic League (HAAL) kicked it up a notch this week as the nine teams in the boys division begin to play within the conference for most of the remaining season. Mt. Eden, Tennyson, Moreau Catholic and Hayward all played games on Tuesday, Jan. 6, and Thursday, Jan. 8, against HAAL rival teams.
Mt. Eden got underway against the Arroyo high Dons, toughing out a tie, 2-2, with goals from both Alfredo Moran and Javier Martin early in the second half. The Monarchs were up 2-1 for only a matter of moments before Arroyo scored an equalizing goal in the 22nd minute.
Next, Mt. Eden took on Castro Valley who was red hot coming in with a seven-game win streak. Mt. Eden struck first early on, but Castro Valley came back to put up two goals in the first half and the eventual win, 2-1.
The Tennyson High Lancers first faced the Pirates from San Leandro, losing 3-0 and dropping their record to 2-6-0 before taking on the Moreau Catholic Mariners later in the week, who were on a four-game skid. Tennyson edged out a close win in the end, 3-2, dropping Moreau to 1-6-1 and only a game and a half over Mt. Eden in the standings.
The Mariners also dropped their first game of the week to Bishop O'Dowd, 4-0, and remain winless in the HAAL for the season.
The Hayward Farmers had a more productive week, tying San Lorenzo, 1-1, and squeaking out a win over Arroyo, 3-2, in their second game of the week. Arroyo jumped on top with a goal in the 25th minute, but the Farmers would not be denied, scoring back-to-back goals in the 32nd and 55th minute. Arroyo hit the equalizer in the 60th minute of play, but a late goal in the 73rd minute put Hayward on top for good.
League play in the HAAL division will continue through most of the remaining season, which wraps up in mid-February.
