Am I a leader?
Submitted By Ivy Wu
I was invited to speak about leadership to a Leadership Class at one of our high schools right before the holidays. I asked the students, "Why do you invite me to speak?" They said, "Because you are a leader."
"What makes you think that I am a leader?" I asked.
"Because you are on the School Board," they responded.
"So, if I am not on the School Board, then I am not a leader?" I questioned.
Indeed, am I only a leader because of my title? Is status symbol all that matters as to who we are? Is that why we join certain clubs or organizations, go to certain schools or colleges, pursue certain degrees and careers, wear certain brand or style of clothing, live in certain neighborhood, drive certain cars...?
I tell the students, "First, take care of being and becoming who you are before aspiring to be a leader or seeking any title. A true leader will lead with or without a title. Be a leader because of the strengths, gifts, potential and passion in you to serve others and make the society a better place for all, not because of how the title may make you look."
