Gene Schwab Award Luncheon

Submitted By Frank De Smidt

The Gene Schwab Award Luncheon is an annual event presented by the Milpitas Rotary Club to honor exemplary City of Milpitas employees.

The luncheon is a special weekly Rotary meeting attended by members, guests, nominees, their guests, our honoree, his guests, elected officials, city officials, city staff, and other interested persons.

The capacity of the large hotel banquet room is around 100 seats. Our mayor, supervisor, representatives for the State Assembly and State Senate, and governor's office have all attended. Congressman's office often attend to recognize our honoree. Our invitations are extended to the White House and both US senators as well.

Gene Schwab lived and worked for the City of Milpitas for over 25 yeas. He began his career on the city maintenance crew in 1958. After continuing his education at Santa Clara University, he worked his way to become Milpitas' first finance director.

Gene served in that capacity for eleven years and obtained national recognition for the City's management of over $100 million in assets. After his retirement in 1980, he moved to a 400-acre family farm in Oklahoma.

Five years later the City re-hired Gene as an investment consultant. Gene was heavily involved in the Milpitas Rotary Club and other community activities. He was well regarded for his positive attitude and love for his family.

Gene was a fair and conscientious man, and in honor of his life, his integrity, and his commitment to the concept of "Service Above Self", in 1995 the members of the Milpitas Rotary Club established this award to honor the tradition that Gene Schwab exemplified years ago.
