Newark Memorial High Lady Cougars wrestling followed up their third place finish at the Roger Briones Invitational last week with a tournament championship at the Castro Valley Girls Invitational.

The Cougars scored 122 team points, just ahead of Jesse Bethel's 117.5; Pittsburg earned third place with 103 points.

Newark was led by junior Alyssa Hess, who earned her second tournament title of the season at 154 lbs., and 165-pound sophomore Katie Burdick. Both girls placed first and earned three pins during the tournament. Hess was also named the upper weight MVP of the tournament.

98-pound freshman Lisa Tran, and junior Laura Choate (126) were second in their respective weight class. Senior Thuy Tran captured third place at 114; and Justine Sanchez finished seventh at 146.

The boys varsity team placed sixth with 124 points at the 45-team Coast Classic Wrestling Invitational at Scotts Valley High.

The Cougars were led by freshman Victor Pereira (135). Pereira, who captured the Newark Rotary Ironman December 7, claimed his second tournament championship of the young season at the Coast Classic. He scored three pins, a major decision and defeated the top-seeded Al Quenga of Overfelt High, 5-2, in the finals.

Albert Young (125), Dennis Nguyen (145) and Greig O'Connor (285) earned fourth place, respectively, in the two-day tournament; and 189-pound Milo Anderson finished in fifth for the Cougars.

Newark's boys wrestling are off until they travel to Stockton Arena for the Big Valley Classic on January 9-10. The girls, however, travel to East Union High on Saturday, Dec. 20, for a dual meet versus the Lady Lancers.
