Lady Cougars win Santa Rosa Tourney

Newark Memorial girls basketball took to the floor before its first game at the Santa Rosa Tournament on Thursday, Dec. 11, a 2-2 team. When they left the court on Saturday, Dec. 13, they were tournament champions.
In their opening round game against Tracy High on December 11, the Lady Cougars jumped out in front and never looked back. They cruised to an easy victory, 62-48, and advanced to the semifinals.
In the semifinal round of the tournament on Friday, Dec. 12, Newark Memorial would match up with the girls from San Ramon Valley High. This would prove to be their toughest game of the weekend. It was a tight affair throughout, but the Lady Cougars, led by Danielle Robledo's 13 points, would pull out the 52-46 victory.
The championship round was on Saturday night, Dec. 13. The Lady Cougars were matched up against host-team Santa Rosa. Led by the duo of Robledo (22 points) and Chaunise Powell (21 points), Newark Memorial cruised to victory, 57-43.
Robledo was named to the all-tournament team; Powell was named tournament MVP. The Lady Cougars improved to 5-2 on the season, and next play Monta Vista on Friday, Dec. 19, at 5 p.m. before hosting the Second Annual MVAL Girls Basketball Shootout on December 20. Newark will host Windsor at 7:30 p.m. to cap off the day of games.
