By Giovanni Albanese Jr.
Over the weekend of December 5-7, Newark Memorial High School hosted the 20th Annual Newark Rotary Ironman Duals, which matched up 11 high school wrestling teams against each other.
Separated in two divisions, Blue (Mission SJ, Beyer, Los Gatos, Marin Catholic, St. Francis and Ponderosa) and Gold (Newark, Milpitas, Bakersfield, Downey and Will C. Wood), the teams participated in a round-robin tournament for five rounds.
After the round robin, first place from each division matched up against one another, as well as second through fifth place teams; and last place in the Blue division (Beyer) did not participate, claiming 11th place.
Bakersfield defeated St. Francis (40-35) to win the tournament; Ponderosa out-dueled Will C. Wood (38-28) to take third; Newark won fifth place in its match up with Los Gatos (49-19); Downey downed Mission SJ (34-28) in the seventh-place match; and Milpitas took ninth, defeating Marin Catholic (31-24).
There were 14 separate weight classes in the tournament. Arnold Hwa (MSJ) and Arnold Shir (Mil) finished third and fourth in the 113 division, respectively; Tu Pham (New) landed in fourth in the 120; Albert Young (New) was second in 126; Victor Pereira (New) won the 136; Bilial Hararah (MSJ) and Dennis Nguyen (New) finished third and fourth respectively in the 146; Jose Ruvalcaba (MSJ) took second in the 153; Milo Anderson (New) got second in 190; and Greig O'Connor (New) and Daniel Musika (Mil) took second and fourth respectively in the 286.
