Holiday for the Arts Gala and Show
By Vidya Pradhan
With Christmas around the corner, here comes an opportunity to snag that special present, a handmade piece of art that is sure to impress your loved one. The Olive Hyde Art gallery is planning its annual Holiday for the Arts Show and Sale December 5-7. The show is put together by the Olive Hyde Art Guild.
"The arts budget is usually the first to be cut," says Karen Tobin, president of the Guild, explaining the origins of the non-profit organization. Started by a group of art lovers, the Guild supports the visual arts in Fremont, in particular, the Olive Hyde Art Gallery. The gallery is named after Olive Hyde, a historian and conservationist who donated the building and is an important cultural showcase and resource of the City of Fremont. When an economic downturn threatened to close the gallery, the Olive Hyde Art Guild stepped in to help keep it going. The annual show and sale is the biggest project of the guild. Run entirely by volunteers, it has raised over $120,000 in past years for the visual arts in Fremont.
This year the Holiday for the Arts Show and Sale features more than eighty artists who will offer their pieces for sale. The gallery will be stacked and stocked with choice pieces, original works that will include ceramics, paintings, fiber art, wood, holiday art and craft and jewelry. Prices for the original art will range anywhere from a couple of dollars to a thousand. "The handmade jewelry pieces are the most popular items," says Karen. All the art is juried by members of the guild to ensure the highest quality. Every single piece is handmade.
The highlight of the show is an original painting by Thomas Cory, a Fremont artist whose work as a minister infuses his art. Arising from a deep love of nature, his beautiful landscapes have earned several awards and prizes and been exhibited in many galleries. This wonderful piece of art will be awarded to one Gala visitor from a drawing of ticket stubs.
Seventy-five percent of gala proceeds go to the City of Fremont, specifically for a visual arts-based wish list. The rest is used by the guild for the city of Fremont's "Art in the Schools" program, art books for the library and scholarships for high school seniors wishing to pursue further education in art. This year part of the proceeds will also be used for scholarships for children to attend Fremont's summer art classes.
This year marks the 26th such event and promises to be varied and exciting. With the holidays upon us, this is a great opportunity to catch up on shopping for that special someone. Mark your calendar to visit Fremont's cultural gem.
