Red Heart Devils win Newark Graduation Cup
By Franz Bruckner
Newark Red Heart Devils captured the U-8 Girls Championship last month by winning the Newark Graduation Cup.
Red Heart Devils defeated Shooting Stars, 1-0, in a shootout following a 0-0 score after 50 minutes of regulation time, and 10 minutes of overtime.
Ariana Pereira, Elizabeth McPherson and Rachel Bruckner scored goals during the shootout to give the victory to the Red Heart Devils. Pereira had several opportunities to score in the game, and was unlucky to have been shutout during regulation and overtime.
The defense, led by Bruckner, Madison Perry, Kristina Alvarez and Priscilla Alvarez, did an excellent job to keep the Shooting Stars from scoring. It was an excellent effort by both teams in this final, as well as all four teams in the tournament.
Red Heart Devils made it to the championship by defeating the Wild Chipmunks, 1-0, thanks to a goal by McPherson, with Bruckner, Priscilla Alvarez and Carissa Perez-York playing well for the Devils.
Prior to reaching the championship game, Red Heart Devils lost to the Shooting Stars, 2-0; followed by defeating a tough Cougars team, 2-0, on goals by Kristina Alvarez and McPherson, with Samantha Gutierrez collecting both assists on the two Devil goals.
Perry and Pereira also had an excellent game while playing goalie for the Devils, while Adriana Flores-Delgado did her part in keeping the Cougars scoreless.
