American High freshman football finish unbeaten season
Submitted By Bret Casey
The American High School freshman football team just completed an undefeated season that brought home a co-championship with Newark Memorial.
The Eagles finished the season with a 7-0-1 record. Their lone tie came in a hard-fought contest against Newark that ended, 8-8. But most important is the fact that this is American's first football title at any level since the 1995 season. It also marks the first time American has beat Logan at any level since '95.
The offense was led by QB Tyrell Lockett. He threw five touchdowns on the year with only one interception. He also carried the ball 59 times for 646 yards and six scores. In the finale against Mission San Jose, he carried the ball 13 times for 346 yards and three touchdowns.
Also on offense, RB Deshane Hines carried the load all year long with 140 carries for 760 yards and a team-high 13 touchdowns.
On the defensive side of the ball is where American dominated its opponents. They allowed just 42 points all year. With five interceptions, 14 sacks, 10 fumble recoveries and two safeties, the defense was rarely on the field. The defense was led by George McCloud (53 tackles, 7 sacks, 1 safety) at nose guard, and hard-hitting LB Joden Ulep (51 tackles, 1 int. and 3 fumble recoveries). Also, Maurice Leggett was a lock-down defensive back who was a dominating presence in the secondary.
