On Thursday, October 30, George Bischalaney, CEO of Eden Medical Center presented a grant check for $100,000, on behalf of Sutter Health, to Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center in Union City.

Tiburcio and another clinic supported by Eden - Davis Street Family Resource Center in San Leandro - each received $100,000 from Sutter for their long-standing efforts to provide health care to low-income and uninsured patients.

Eden Medical Center is a Sutter affiliate with campuses in Castro Valley and San Leandro. According to Bischalaney, "Eden has long been an ally with Tiburcio and Davis Street and we are well aware of their great service in our community.

"When Sutter gave us an opportunity to apply for funds through the Community Clinic Access to Care Grant program, we immediately thought of these two clinics.Serving local residents, caring for those most in need, and providing quality health care services to the under-served and uninsured is a major priority of both clinics."

Nancy Dyar, Eden's director of planning and organizational development, was instrumental in recommending and supporting Tiburcio and Davis Street to win the grants. "We are very proud to support these two highly-regarded organizations for many years as they have cared for those most in need and have offered excellent medical services to our underserved communities," commented Dyar.

Tiburcio, which has been serving patients in need for nearly 40 years, is using the $100,000 grant to expand primary care services to include low-income and uninsured residents of the unincorporated areas of Cherryland and Ashland (located between San Leandro and Hayward).

Tiburcio's Hayward Clinic will also use grant money to team up with Eden and offer birthing and breastfeeding educational programs to increase perinatal services for Spanish-speaking pregnant women and new mothers. Tiburcio is closely involved with the Eden Livability Initiative, an effort to reduce health disparities and increase access to care for the medically underserved in South Alameda County.

The Tiburcio and Davis Street clinics are two of 26 medical and dental centers in Northern California that received the award through Sutter Health's Community Clinic Access to Care grant program. This year, the program is funneling more than $2.5 million to community health clinics that provide vital services to individuals and families in need.

The $100,000 check was presented by Eden executives to the Tiburcio staff and volunteers at its Union Street Clinic location at 33255 9th Street. To learn more about Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center visit www.tvhc.org.
