OTC 1 Vortex 1
On Thursday evening, October 16, the two top teams in Fremont's U-16 Girls division
met for the final time this season and there was a lot hanging on the result as second place Vortex needed to beat their rival, OTC, to have a realistic chance of winning the league.
Vortex was up for the challenge and started strongly. They contested every ball and pushed forward trying to open the scoring. OTC's defense was hard-pressed and goalkeeper, Sara Talooi, saw a lot of the ball. With fifteens minutes left in the first half, Vortex finally scored the goal they deserved as Talooi could not hold onto a strong shot. Minutes later Vortex might have extended their lead except for a great diving save by Talooi. OTC hardly had a shot on goal and were lucky go into the break only one goal down.
In the second half, OTC regrouped and started to get themselves back in the game with strong performances by Karina Paonessa and Molly Corey in midfield. The game was now end-to-end with chances at both ends. Finally OTC started getting the upper hand and had a great chance to score when Erica Ohye beat the goalie to the ball at the edge of the six yard box. With the goal keeper out of the goal, Ohye tried to pass the ball to Megan Dunn who had the goal at her mercy, but a defender intercepted the pass and cleared the danger. On the next attack, Dunn sped into the penalty area only to be chopped down by two defenders. The resulting penalty was taken by Ohye, who saw her shot beat the keeper but then go over the bar. With ten minutes left Ohye redeemed herself as she won the ball on the right edge of the penalty box and lobbed a sweet ball to Dunn who prodded the ball into the net from about five yards out to make the final score 1-1.
OTC 4 Quicksilver 0
On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, October 18, at Fremont's Central Park, OTC came up against Quicksilver. From the kickoff, the OTC defense of Christina Kim, Tiffany Sarchet, Kelly Makela, Kinsey Mead and Jessica Spano played a strong game and as a result the ball was mainly in the Quicksilver half of the field. Midfielder Rachel Heng narrowly missed putting OTC ahead when her long range shot hit the crossbar. Erica Ohye finally broke the deadlock when Mead took a free kick just inside the Quicksilver half and launched a ball into the heart of Quicksilver's box to Ohye who volleyed the ball home from close range. Later, defender Sarchet dribbled the ball down the entire right side of field before tapping the ball inside to Zarin Kahn who hammered the ball into the upper corner of the goal. Five minutes from half time, Rhian Dunn dribbled the ball down to Quicksilver's goal line before crossing the ball to Ohye who easily tapped in her second goal of the game to make the halftime score 3-0.
The second half started much the same as the first, with OTC pressing forward. Mead, who was moved from defense to left wing had several chances including a shot which hit the crossbar and a free kick which would have crept into the corner of the goal if Quicksilver keeper, Emilia Morua, had not dived to force the ball around the post for a
corner. Heng finally ended the scoring when she pounced on a poorly cleared ball and shot past the keeper from long range to make the final score 4-0.
