Cal State East Bay cross-country teams hit the trails
By Idorenyin Uto-Uko
The Pioneers of Cal State East Bay are back on the trails this cross-country season. For the past five years the Pioneers have been the team to beat in the Cal Pacific Conference. The women's team has captured five conference titles in five years. Both Men's and Women's teams won the conference championship in 2007.
Despite their past accomplishments, 2008 is a rebuilding season for these trailblazers. Gone from last year's women's team are All-Conference standouts: Adilene Sanchez, Jin-Mee Leal, Yesenia Esparza, and Annie Sien. The men lost key All-Conference runners: Marcos Gomer, Landry Daniels, Russ Burkholder, and John Erlandson.
Both of the programs have had to rely on underclassmen and inexperienced juniors for scoring. The women are lead by freshman Kelly Guerro. Guerro finished fifth place individually at the prestigious Stanislaus Invite on September 6. Her top five placing helped the team to finish second overall in the team standings. Other top runners at the invite were: Nancy Velazquez, Bernadette Lu, and Johnna Hotchkiss. The Pioneer men are lead by last year's All-Conference runners Elliot Nicholson and Andrew Welch.
