Boomers battle, but come up short twice.
Submitted By Blaise Castren
The Boomers, a U-14 girls soccer team in Fremont, had a tough week, losing a pair of games by one goal. Whoop This Team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Boomers 3-2 while the Stompers weathered an 11-shot Boomers attack to prevail 1-0.
Against Whoop This Team, the Boomers had four early scoring opportunities before they fell behind 1-0. However, before halftime, Elena Strom set up Raquel Rodas, who had a long run and scored the tying goal.
The early part of the second half was action-packed. Strom had two shots on goal, while Eva Liu and Rodas each had one, the latter on a great set-up pass by Ashley Campbell. Meanwhile, Kailey Richardson, Samantha Stephens and Claire Castren were playing standout defense, and Boomers goalkeeper, Lauren Youhanna, came up with two big saves. Finally, the Boomers broke through when Rodas scored her second goal off a corner kick that caromed off a defender into the goal.
Campbell and Jenna Wondka each had shots on goal before Whoop This Team stunned the Boomers with two goals in the final five minutes.
In their second game in four days, the Boomers took on the Stompers. The two teams previously met in the season opener, which the Boomers won 1-0.
However, in this contest, the Stompers jumped out in front with a first-half tally. In the second half, the Boomers had 10 shots on goal in an effort to tie the game - two each by Katie Courville, Rodas, Campbell and Youhanna; and one by Strom and Ciara Valdez - but were unable to put one past the Stompers goalie, who went on to win the game, 1-0. Abby Harrison played well on defense for the Boomers, who fell to 4-4 on the season.
