"On Your Toes" Hannah Welker Memorial Tournament
Submitted By Nanette Cook
Fremont TOPS, a U12 D-1 girls soccer team, was honored to participate in the inaugural "On Your Toes" Hannah Welker Memorial Soccer Tournament held on September 27-28 in San Jose. The tournament is dedicated to the memory of Hannah Welker "H" #47, a 12-year-old soccer player for the San Jose Thunder who tragically lost her life in an auto accident in July.
The TOPS played outstanding team soccer, dominating the opposition all weekend long with excellent ball movement and an aggressive offense which led them to outscore their opponents by 16 goals over five games. The defense was just as intense, keeping the ball out of their end of the field for most of every game.
The TOPS outstanding efforts earned them a spot in the Championship Game versus the MVLA Dynamite from the Mountain View/Los Altos area. This final match was a physical one for TOPS, who were impressive, taking several shots on goal and moving the ball well. The game was tied at the end of regulation, 1-1, forcing a five-minute overtime period.
With the score still tied at the end of overtime, the teams moved on to penalty kicks to determine the winner. Both teams kicked very well with MVLA coming out the victor and Fremont TOPS team taking second place.
TOPS players participating in the "On Your Toes" tournament were Carly Turner, Dakota Sierras, Dinaz Bamji; Jarna Patel, Jessica Hernandez, Juliana McCuaig, Lauren Clark, Megan Coffey, Melissa Reese, Melody Song, Peyton Cook, Rebecca Ryan, Rhianna Soares, Sharan Singh, Vienna Curtis and Yvette Cuellar. The team is led by coach Rob Hernandez and assistant coach Lindsey Lewis.
