Submitted By Nanette Cook
Fremont TOPS, a girls U-12, D-1 soccer team, was the victor in an exciting overtime win during a NorCal State Cup Division game vs. MV 97 Rockers from Mill Valley on Sunday, Sept. 14, at Central Park in Fremont.
In the first half, the TOPS grabbed a 1-0 lead when Vienna Curtis booted the ball into the back of the net. Aggressive offensive play by Tylore Bell, Juliana McCuaig, Sharan Singh and Melissa Reese kept the Rockers on their toes the entire game. TOPS also performed admirably on the defensive end with solid marking by Megan Coffey, Melody Song, Jessica Hernandez, Lauren Clark and goalie Carly Turner, who held the Rockers to just one goal. Rockers' lone goal came in the second half off of a corner kick that snuck by Turner.
At the end of regulation, with the score tied 1-1, the teams were forced to play a five minute overtime period to determine the victor since the game could not end in a tie. TOPS dominated the last two minutes of overtime play hammering the ball and keeping it in the Rockers' half of the pitch. With just 30 seconds left in overtime and the game about to go to a penalty-kick shootout, Singh received a cross from Bell and slammed one into the back of net, giving TOPS the 2-1 overtime win, sending the TOPS players into a celebratory frenzy.
TOPS is led by head coach Rob Hernandez and assistant coach Lindsey Lewis. |
