Letter to the Editor: Measure UU Needs Our Support in Union City
As a member of the Union City Human Relations Commission, a group appointed to promote the harmony and well being of all of the diverse members of our community, I strongly encourage all of the citizens of Union City to vote on November 4 and to vote YES! on Measure UU.
Measure UU is about Public Safety. We typically think of public safety in terms of the police and fire departments and the services that they provide the community. Measure UU recognizes their importance and extends the existing parcel tax that has helped funded police and fire services for the past five years. Regardless of how you feel about the police and fire department on a scale of 1 to 10, when and emergency happens you are going to dial 9-1-1 and they will be there to respond.
In addition to providing funding for the police and fire departments, Measure UU also includes provisions to provide funding for youth violence prevention and intervention programs in Union City. Our youth face a crisis, fueled by conflict, violence and the lack of good choices and opportunities. Measure UU funding will be used not only to help those who have been in trouble, but also to provide services and assistance to those at risk, to help them avoid getting into trouble in the first place. Having fewer youth impacted by violence increases the safety of our community as a whole. This is public safety.
Vote YES! on Measure UU.
