Qigong Grandmasters will visit Ohlone College

Submitted By Robin Kurotori

Ohlone College Newark Center for Health Sciences and Technology presents a two-day Qigong Symposium presented by a delegation of certified "Qigong" masters from China. In their only West Coast appearance, the masters will introduce four easy-to-learn forms of Qigong on October 11 and 12.

On Saturday, the visiting delegation will provide an introduction to the practice of Qigong. Two forms will be taught on Saturday and the other two on Sunday. On Sunday afternoon the Pure Shaolin Kung Fu School will give a Kung Fu and Qigong Performance and Demonstration.

Qigong has been well received by people of all ages and ability, playing an active role in maintaining health, improving the immune system and increasing longevity. Recently, Qigong has been studied for its role in stress reduction and mental health. It has become popular among corporate executives and individuals in high profile, high stress positions as a way to find balance in their busy lives. The different styles all involve posture, breathing techniques and mental focus, and vary from soft internal styles such as Tai Chil, to more vigious styles such as Kung Fu.

The four forms of Qigong presented here are Five Animal Frolics (wuxingxi), Bone Marrow Washing (yijinjing), Six Healing Sounds (liuzijue), and Eight Section Brocade (baduanjin). These four forms are based on traditional healthcare methods and refined by the Chinese Health Qigong Association (CHQA), the only nationally sanctioned health Qigong organization in China.

This symposium is open to the public and no experience is necessary. Registration is available online at For additional information and group discount, please contact Robin Kurotori at 510.742.2350.
