Off The Chain starts season with a victory

Submitted By Ed Ohye

It was opening day for FC Fremont soccer club on Saturday, September 6, and you could feel the excitement in the air as you stepped on the grass at Fremont's Central Park. You could hear the cheering from the parents on the sidelines when their kids made great plays, the coaches shouting instructions, the players shouting to their teammates to pass the ball, and the sound of the referee's whistle. All these sights and sounds make Opening Day a very special day.

The Girls of Off The Chain (OTC) started the game with the wind at their backs and kicked off with a blast of a kick from midfielder Rachel Heng which went deep into the opposing team's (Vortex) side of the field. The OTC offense then went to work and kept the ball in the Vortex end for most of the first half as they were led by super plays and support from midfielders Rhian Dunn, Chrystalle Navarro, Karina Paonessa, Heng and Molly Cory.

OTC forwards Selina Mahesri, Nicole Gronski, Erica Ohye and Stephanie Schembri kept the Vortex goalie very busy with many shots on goal. The first score of the game came about midway through the first half when Cory lobbed a beautiful crossing shot from the right side of the field to the left side of the goal. A perfectly positioned Ohye met Cory's shot as it came down and slammed it into the back of the net with a "sledgehammer"-like kick.

The second goal of the game came behind the teamwork of Cory and Ohye near the end of the first half and was just as spectacular as the first goal. Heng collected the ball at midfield and dribbled her way through several Vortex defenders and finally faced the Vortex goal keeper face to face in the goal box. With one quick feint move to the right, Heng fired a rocket past the keeper into the upper left corner of the goal mouth, just out of the keepers reach for OTC's second goal.

In the second half of the game the Vortex team came out swinging and had many shots on OTC goal keeper Rhian Dunn. With the help of defensive players Sara Talooi, Kinsey Mead, Megan Dunn, Christina Kim, Kelly Makela, Tiffany Sarchet, and Jessica Spano, the OTC defense limited the Vortex scoring to only one goal. An exciting Opening Day Game ended with Off The Chain edging out Vortex 2-1.
