Letter to the Editor: Washington Hospital 'Original' has questions

I was disturbed by Washington Hospital's CEO accumulating a few previous Chief's of its medical staff in the Argus, 9/2/08 and in the Tri-City Voice 9/3/08, a political ploy and probably a free lunch. At least the CEO should have included all the Washington Hospital Chiefs of Staff of fifty years not an eighteen year's display. The missing key was only two originals are in the Argus/Tri-City Voice article. The remaining living originals being: Tom Evernden, John O'Connor, Holger Rasmussen, Edward Mayer, Robert Singer, Ralph Alperin, Eugenia Ng and myself. To have included the "Originals" would have informed the Washington Township Community a good understanding why the hospital is scrambling now. The Community taxpayers for its Public Hospital would absolutely know Washington Hospital was great and now, not so great. Many past patients becoming recent patients would and do agree.

The financial aspects of Washington Hospital under the Board and CEO are a hidden agenda. The CEO's 'hired' physicians (ER Doc's, Hospitalists and private doctors as well as contracted doctors) must be made public. Attempts to obtain names, credentials and qualifications have been obstructed by the CEO. Was this a Board decision or the CEO's?

Another impasse is who, if anyone is proctoring and observing these borderline physicians? As a piece of information on this subject, a majority of Kaiser Doctors belong to the Alameda Contra Costa Medical Association, ACCMA. In contrast, there is a lack of substantial membership by Washington Hospital Medical staff. Would this have anything to do with ACCMA's better peer-review system? There are two Washington Hospital Board members (physicians) who elect not to support our medical profession by not belonging to ACCMA. As physicians, they should set the standard of professionalism!

A breath of hope, the Letter to the Editor Argus 9/2/08 by Dr. Steven Ross, previous Chief of Staff, Quote "Finally, if there is any weakness in our peer review system, it is that the process is not critical enough or timely in removing incompetent physicians from Medical Staffs".
