Ashland Little League offers weekly Bingo Night
By Anthony Lynch
Ashland Little League will celebrate its 25th season anniversary in 2009. However, it is relying heavily on community support to see a 26th season.
Serving the children of Hayward, San Leandro and San Lorenzo, the league depends on fundraisers to maintain financial stability. Ashland Little League with approximately 170 children ranging from 5 to 14 years old in its program, offers a fun and possibly profitable means of supporting their activities through Bingo Night.
Wednesday Bingo Night has been a staple of the league for the past nine years; it accounts for the majority of their fundraising efforts. (The only other main fundraising event is their annual Cinco De Mayo Carnival.) Unlike many other youth programs, the league does not conduct individual fundraising events such as cookie dough sales. With very few fundraising efforts, Bingo Night is Ashland Little League's heartbeat.
"Bingo Night is a very important part of our league," said Sarah Reynaga, the league's auxiliary chairperson for the coming 2009 season. "It's our life-blood."
The downturn in the economy has had a significant effect on Bingo Night resulting in a significant loss of vital revenue for the league. Reynaga warned that if the Bingo Night turnout problems continue, the league may lose the ability to hold the weekly event, a devastating blow to its ability to fund the baseball program.
Held at the Carpenters Union Hall on Mattox Road in Hayward, Bingo Night takes place from 6:30 p.m. - 10 p.m. every Wednesday. Doors open at 4 p.m. Early arrivals can reserve their favorite spots and enjoy a dinner special. Bingo card packages range from $20 for two cards to $45 for nine cards; winning cards award as much as $250 in prize money per game. The hall also offers instant win cards, akin to a scratch-off lottery ticket.
