Fortunately, members of the community quickly stepped in to help rebuild this valuable community resource, including the orthodontic office of Drs. Leonard and Scott Chong in Union City. Victoria Popejoy, who co-founded Hope for the Heart with her mother, Vivian Vargas, nearly a decade ago, is a former patient of the Chong doctors, as are her three children. Dr. Scott Chong explains, "The Popejoys have been our patients and friends for several years. After we learned about the devastating fire, we wanted to do something meaningful. We hope that we can help Hope for the Heart get back on its feet and continue providing much needed support to families throughout the Bay Area." Drs. Chong are hosting a food and toy drive for Hope for the Heart, encouraging patients and other members of the community to bring nonperishable food and new toys to the office over the next three months. Each donated item earns a ticket in a raffle drawing with prizes like an Apple iPod and gift cards to local retailers. Drs. Chong are donating the raffle prizes, making a $500 cash donation directly to Hope for the Heart, and offering storage space for the donated goods. Drs. Chong's office has been in Union City for more than 25 years and they maintain good relationships with former patients and the community at large. They encourage interested donors to drop off nonperishable food and new toys Tuesday through Friday between 8:30 am and 5 pm at their office, located at 33800 Alvarado-Niles Road, Suite 1 in Union City. Donors do not need to be patients to receive tickets for the raffle drawing. Their office is located near James Logan High School, just five minutes from the 880 freeway.
