Niles - Centerville Senior All Stars win sectionals and advance

It was a rough start for Niles but with an errorless defense behind starting pitcher Athen Sinodinos Niles was able to pull off a 2-1 victory over Redwood City. The first batter of the game for Redwood City, Zeek Edwards, walked and scored and it wouldn't be until the sixth inning that Niles would get that run back.
The rally really started in the top of the sixth inning with Sinodinos fielding three ground balls back to him to get all three outs. This fired up the Niles boys and when they came up to bat in the bottom of the inning, shortstop Jay Haak reached first base getting hit by the pitch to keep their momentum going. Two pitches later, Haak advanced to second on a pass ball and Robert Higares moved him over to third hitting a ground ball to second. Spencer Romero, with a hit to left center, scored Haak to tie the game, but that was all Niles could do. In the seventh inning Redwood City tried to get a rally with two outs when Edwards singled to center but a strike-out by Nick Brown would end their hopes of another run. For Niles this was it, score now or head into extra innings. First batter, Phillip Rugani with an excellent at bat drew a walk on a full count. Rugani stole second and then would score the winning run with a base hit to right center by catcher Casey Jennings. It was mayhem from there. With the crowd chanting "Casey, Casey" all the boys rushed the field.
This will be Niles Centerville's second team to advance to the Division 2 Tournament in Sacramento in four years. The first team in 2004, which consisted of half the boys on this team, lost in the Championship game for the Divisional title to Visalia, CA.
