Step back in time with the Victorian Ice Cream Social

By Aditya Anand

This weekend, the Mission Peak Heritage Foundation will once again host their annual Victorian Ice Cream Social at the historic Shinn House. The Shinn House, a jewel of Fremont's rich history, is located near the intersection of Peralta Blvd. and Mowry Ave., nestled among lush trees, green lawns, and beautiful gardens.

Founded by Dr. Robert Fisher, the Mission Peak Heritage Foundation aims to preserve the history of the former Washington Township (now the cities of Fremont, Newark, and Union City). Through Dr. Fisher's work, the Foundation assisted the Shinn family in donating their house and land to the city of Fremont in 1962. The foundation has further accomplished its goals by maintaining Tri-City historical resources including the Shinn House.

The ice cream social at the Shinn House, a pleasant reminder of a bygone era, will take place on Sunday, July 20 from noon to 4 p.m. Its purpose is to raise money for the foundation, and have fun while reliving a bit of Fremont's history. The social will feature Model A's from the Acorn A's, "Gunfighters of the Old West", a lace-making demonstration, the Piece maker's Quilt Guild, a docent led tour of the historic James and Lucy Shinn House, and a tour of the Shinn Archive Room. Ice cream sundaes, popcorn, and hotdogs will be on sale.

Entering the grounds of Shinn Historical Park takes visitors on a journey back in time. The Victorian-style farmhouse contains authentic furnishings and memorabilia, and a nearby cottage holds the title of being one of the oldest frame houses in the Santa Clara Valley. The 4-1/2 acre park surrounding the house holds many exotic trees and rare plants imported by Shinn, a pioneer in the nursery business. A charming, walled Japanese garden on the grounds is a must-see.

So dust off your bowler hats, open up your parasols and join the fun at the Shinn House. Travel back in time and rediscover our community's rich history at the Mission Peak Heritage Foundation's annual Victorian Ice Cream Social.
