Susie Phanton, and Yoko Martell, among several others have several things in common. They each have a child that is seriously ill and they each spent a lot of time at Stanford Hospital taking care of their little ones. But one other thing that these ladies have in common is that they were given a special day of relaxing salon treatment for Mother's Day, made possible by Mojdeh Froozandeh, owner of the hair salon, and several volunteers who wished to thank these brave mothers in a special way.
Susie Phanton's young daughter was diagnosed with cancer on July 26, 2006. In between hospital visits and everyday obligations, Susie was left with little time for herself. Her social worker informed her of the special day at the Ma Belle Hair Salon, and the experience that she had that day was invigorating. "It was like a dream," said Susie. "They were just so sweet, so kind; so generous with their energy."
"One of the sisters there got her hair cut real short in order to make a wig for her sick sister," Susie added. "It was just really sweet to see that." Along with nine other mothers, Susie had the opportunity to get her hair cut and styled, a manicure and pedicure, along with a massage, makeover, and many other beautification treatments. "Everything that we provide at the salon we offer to the mothers," said Mojdeh.
Another of the honored guests that day was Yoko Martell, and it was her first salon experience in the United States. She said that she was excited to learn about the event, and that it had been a long time since she was able to do something like this for herself. "They really made me feel good," she confirmed.
As a mother of two young children herself, salon owner Mojdeh always wondered how hard it would be to take care of her little ones if they were seriously ill, and she devised this creative way to say "thank you" to these brave mothers who sacrifice so much time for their children. Mojdeh also stated her desire to see other businesses such as hotels and restaurants follow her example in honoring these women with a special day just for them.
When asked if she was planning on continuing the day of honoring mothers at the salon in the following years, Mojdeh confirmed, "Absolutely," and also mentioned her desire to expand it to a day in the winter holiday season as well.
A light, homemade lunch was served to the guests, on a table decorated with candles and flowers. "This year's event was a big success, and we were able to give the guests a well-deserved break, even if only for a few hours," said the director at the salon, Anthony Trent. "Sometimes it only takes a smile or an open ear."
