Fremont Symphony wins California Arts Council Grant

Funds Support Expansion of Children's Concerts

Submitted By Ann Millican

The California Arts Council recently announced that the Fremont Symphony Orchestra is one of 61 arts organizations statewide to receive a $10,000 grant from the 2007-2008 Creating Public Value Program. This grant is given to arts organizations that provide a benefit to their communities through the arts. The Fremont Symphony's project to expand participation in the Children's Concerts was a winner because it demonstrated relationship-building, relevance to the public, and a positive return on investment.

The Fremont Symphony was selected to receive this competitive grant with a project to expand participation in its Children's Concerts by 2,000 students, update and expand classroom materials, add a piece to the concert program that teaches students about musical instruments, and create a DVD to promote the concerts with partners, funders, audiences and community leaders. The project will be implemented as part of the spring 2009 Children's Concerts.

Free annual Children's Concerts have been presented by the symphony for over 30 years in partnership with local school districts and Ohlone College. The concerts provide the opportunity for thousands of students to experience an orchestra concert for the first time. Students from Fremont, Newark, Union City and Milpitas school districts attend a concert with their 4th through 7th grade classes as a weekday field trip. The California Arts Council grant will make it possible for more students to participate in the Children's Concerts.

"The California Arts Council's 'Creating Public Value' grantees contribute to the cultural aspects of their communities." said Muriel Johnson, Director of the California Arts Council. Fremont Symphony Board President Douglas Treadway reacted to the news by saying, "The Creating Public Value grant is very competitive and the Fremont Symphony is honored to receive $10,000. With this grant, the State of California is acknowledging the orchestra's value to the community and is giving our Children's Concerts a vote of confidence."
