Fourth grade Holy Spirit Red takes first place
Submitted By Pat Mapelli
The fourth grade Holy Spirit Red Girls basketball team finished in first place this season for all of Southern Alameda County. With a season record of 9 - 1, they were invited to play in the Diocese Playoffs May 17-21.
It was teamwork that took this team to first place. Every girl contributed to the team in a different way, and all worked together on the court as a unit. Defensively, steals and blocked shots were important to the girls' success. Ogechi Ajawara led the team in blocked shots - she wouldn't let anyone take a shot in her space. Alexis Owens led the team in steals - when the team needed a steal to change the pace of the game, they could rely on Alexis.
Slowing down the pace of the other team with pressure defense was led by Nicole Henderson, Antoinette Carpio, and Caitlin Torres. Being in the right position and fighting for the rebounds was also critical to the girl's success - this was led by Rachel Rice, Amy Friesen, Lauren Alton, and Brooke Mapelli. Constance Aguirre always grounded everyone and reminded the team that having fun was the most important thing of all. Offensively, all of the girls contributed when a basket was needed.
It is also important to note that none of this would have been possible without the volunteer parents, team mom, and the coaches. The coaching was led by Derek and Oshi Owens along with assistance from David Rice and Pat Mapelli. The parent volunteers that helped with score keeping and working the snack bar along with the team mom, Denise Mapelli, really made it possible for the coaches to focus on coaching and the players to focus on playing the game and for everyone to have fun.
This was an awesome season for the girls, one in which they will remember for a long time. Great job girls!
