Discovering Art in Hayward

By Aditya Anand

The famous playwright Oscar Wilde once expressed that the artist is a creator of beautiful things, and the sole purpose of art is to be admired intensely. Although his words were written about the portrait of a young man in one of his novels, they apply to art in real life as well. Hayward's Sun Gallery, for instance, is home to a wide array of beautiful and admirable art worthy of Wilde's words.

Sun Gallery, a community art gallery located on Hayward's "E" Street, brings the work of artists from across Northern California to community residents. Their goal is "to enrich the cultural life of the community and promote art as a universal language." To attain this goal they have made the gallery free to members of the community and have created a range of educational art programs. These programs allow Sun Gallery to bring to the community artwork that it may otherwise never see.

To fulfill their vision of opening hearts and minds to art, the Sun Gallery also extends its collection to the community through a variety of events. One new event, "Discovering Art in Hayward", will be an eclectic show that features work from emerging and prominent artists in the surrounding area. Open from June 19 to July 19, visitors will view local art and have the opportunity to admire the gallery's permanent collection. Artists whose works will be on display include Barbara Berrner, Ed Ortman, Marlo Duffy, Eleanor Joslin, Carol Bettencourt, and others.

A reception for "Discovering Art in Hayward" will be held on Friday, June 20 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. During the reception, visitors can meet several of the artists and enjoy a snack while viewing the art. Anyone interested is encouraged to come. For more information about this event or future events at Sun Gallery, visit or call (510)-581-4050.
