Minor Tigers Win 2008 Warm Springs Little League Regular Season Championship

Submitted By Julie Craft

The Warm Springs Little League (WSLL) Minor Tigers ended the regular baseball season undefeated in the first eight games with an 86% winning record and securing the Minor League Championship with 15 wins, 1 tie, and 2 losses. The Tigers rallied for a comeback win during their final game against the Giants.

Both teams were off to a great start with the Giants scoring 4 runs in the first inning. Tiger Pitcher Zain Ahmed fired in some fast pitches along with great batting by all Tigers, including a power hit by Steven West, ending the first inning in a 4-4 tie. The second inning took off with strong defensive fielding by the Tigers, including a spectacular bare-handed fly-ball catch by Second Baseman Nick Bugbee. The 4-4 tie carried over into the top of the third inning due to strong pitching by both the Giants and the Tiger's pitcher, Rustie Lin.

In the third inning, the Giants were hitting well and aggressively stealing to score two RBIs while holding the Tigers and ending the inning 4-6. During the top of the fourth inning, Tiger Pitcher Jason Yu was unstoppable by striking out the first batter, scooping up an infield ball, and making the second out with an awesome throw to teammate Arsalon Pirzada, who was born ready at first base. The third batter was declared out when Tiger Third Baseman Wes Craig launched an amazing missile throw all the way from third base right into Arsalon's glove at first base. As we entered the fifth inning, the Giants held their lead with a score of 4-6. During the top of the fifth inning, Tiger Pitcher Tebrez Khan threw several fastball strikes with only one RBI for the Giants, who were now leading the Tigers 4-7. During the bottom of the fifth inning, the Tigers began to rally for a comeback in the batter's box with Jarad Craig, Simon Ramirez, Tebrez, Nick, Zain, and Arsalon together driving in four RBIs, the maximum number of runs a team is allowed to score in one inning, giving the Tigers a narrow lead of 8-7.

In the top of the sixth and final inning, Josiah Liu took the pitcher's mound, making history for the Tiger team. The Tigers became one of the first Minor team's in the past decade to allow every team member to pitch at least one batter throughout the regular season. The Giants cheered their team on to score one RBI, tying the game 8-8. The Tigers propelled into full rallying mode as they went up to bat entering the bottom of the sixth inning of their last game of the season tied 8-8. No pressure for veteran Brett Beardsley as he stepped up to the plate, only to be walked to first base.

Power hitter Wes was up to bat next with only one pitch in when Brett aggressively began to steal second base only to observe an overthrow from the catcher which motivated Brett to keep running right on to third base. An unbelievable turn of events as Brett approached third base and experienced another overthrow allowing Brett to put it into high gear, rounding third base and successfully sliding into home plate winning the game 9-8 for the Tigers and clinching the season championship!

The Mighty Tigers were led to victory this season by their Team Manager, Waqas Khan, and Coaches Dave Beardsley, Waseem Ahmed, and Derrick Lin, with extended team support from all of the parents. The Tigers will enter the Tournament of Champions and the final tournament championship game will take place on Saturday, June 14th at 10 a.m. at the WSLL fields in Fremont.
