Chabot College Math Students Compete in National Contest

Submitted By Joe Berland

The American Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges recently completed its national 2007-2008 competition, and Chabot College students performed quite well. Joe Berland, mathematics instructor, reported that in the Student Math League contest, Chabot students completed the two rounds ranked 29th out of 174 participating schools.

The four top Chabot College students this year are: First place: Zhao-Ping Yan (49.0 points); Second place: Baoying Yuan (35.5 points); Third Place: Antony Chang (35.0 points); and Fourth Place: Jie-Tong Lin (33.0 points).

*The multiple choice test is quite brutal,* said Berland. *We teachers try these tests at home, and they are quite difficult for us as well.* During the year, one round is given in the fall with the second round in the spring. Each test consists of a 20-question multiple-choice test in pre-calculus mathematics, and the students have exactly one hour to complete it. The tests are scored by awarding two points for each correct answer and deducting a half point for each incorrect answer.

The tests are given in a Chabot College classroom and nearly 6,000 students take these exams nationwide. Berland is the moderator of the local contest, which includes organizing the actual examination as well as finding proctors, grading and then reporting the results to the national organization.

The ultimate goal of the contest is to engender love of mathematics, and a competitive spirit as well as school spirit.

Chabot College is a community college offering more than 100 degree and certificate programs throughout the year. The campus caters to a diverse, vital student population of 15,000 whose goals range from transfer to a four-year college to skills training and personal enrichment. Classes cost $20 per unit for California residents. Students may register online at www.chabotcollege.edu For registration information please call (510) 723-6700. Chabot College is located at 25555 Hesperian Boulevard in Hayward.
