Ohlone Community College sophomore baseball players move on to four year colleges

Moving on with Baseball Scholarships:

Matt Langseth 2B- Cornell University (New York) - Langseth was a two-time First Team ALL-Conference player for Ohlone. Langseth led the 2008 Renegades in many offensive categories. He had a team high batting average of .370, led in stolen bases with 25, triples with 5, walks with 25, hits with 61, and runs scored with 56. Langseth was also an outstanding second baseman finishing his career with a .977 fielding percentage. Langseth will be entering the Ivy League next season and play at Cornell University. Langseth prepped at California High School in San Ramon for Head Baseball Coach Brian Coburn

Kurtis Sherer RHP- University of Hawaii Hilo - Sherer signed a national letter of Intent in the early signing period with The University of Hawaii-Hilo for Head Baseball Coach Joey Estella. Sherer was the closer for Ohlone this past season and had a team high 5 saves for the Renegades. Sherer plans to study Japanese history at Hilo. Sherer finished his academic career at Ohlone College with a cumulative GPA of 3.93. Sherer prepped at Livermore High School for Head Baseball Coach Dave Perotti.

Joe Gardner RHP- University of California Santa Barbara - Gardner signed a national letter of intent to play for the Gauchos next season at Santa Barbara. He will be joining a team who recently was 31-19 and in the hunt for the Big West Championship and a Division I tournament bid. Gardner was a Coast Conference South Honorable Mention in 2008. Gardner had 118 strikeouts in his two years at Ohlone. Gardner prepped at Milpitas High School for Head Baseball Coach Chuy Zamudio.

Shane Murchison RHP - San Jose State University - Murshison has committed to San Jose State baseball for 2008. Murchison was the Renegades leader on the mound this past spring. He had a won-loss record of 9-3 with 63 strikeouts. Shane also allowed only 39 earned runs in 87 innings pitched. Murchison was recognized for his accomplishments this year when he was named to the Second Team ALL-Conference list. He will be joining Coach Sam Piraro's Spartan pitching staff next season. It has been a goal of Murchison to attend San Jose State. His father Pete, who is the principal of Irvington High School, also graduated from San Jose State. Murchison prepped at Irvington High School, Fremont for Head Baseball Coach Larry Harrington.

Justin Lunday 1B - York College (Nebraska) - Lunday was voted an All Coast Conference Honorable Mention in 2008 for the Renegades. He earned a baseball scholarship to play baseball next spring in Nebraska at York College. Lunday led the team in doubles with 17, and finished tied for second in RBI's with 37. Lunday played a very good first base this spring and only had 8 errors with 383 put outs, and finished with a .981 fielding percentage. Lunday prepped at Irvington High School, Fremont for Head Baseball Coach Larry Harrington.

Nick Caravelli 3B- York College (Nebraska) - Caravelli earned a baseball scholarship to play next season at York College in Nebraska with first baseman teammate Lunday. Caravelli had a good sophomore season and finished the season with 21 RBI's, 8 doubles, 2 home runs, and 1 triple. Caravelli played a solid third base for Ohlone in his two year career and finished with a career fielding percentage of .967 fielding percentage. Caravelli prepped at Granada High School, Livermore for Head Baseball Coach Tony Battilega.

Rich McDowell SS - Cal Poly Pomona - McDowell earned a full scholarship to Cal Poly Pomona to play shortstop next season. McDowell was named All-Coast Conference Honorable Mention after having very good offensive numbers for the Renegades. McDowell led the team in RBI's with 39. He was also second on the team in doubles with 15, had 2 home runs and tied Langseth for the team high in triples with 5. McDowell was a great teammate and emerged as a team leader for the Renegades. McDowell prepped at Archbishop Mitty High School, San Jose for Head Baseball Coach Bill Hutton.

Zach Townsend CF - Campbellsville University (Kentucky) - Townsend earned a baseball scholarship to Campbellsville University in Kentucky after having a very good sophomore season. Townsend transferred to Ohlone from Mission College in Santa Clara. Townsend had 19 RBI's for the Renegades along with 12 stolen bases. Townsend led the team in sacrifice bunts with 21. He was also outstanding in center field committing only one error all season and ending with a .985 fielding percentage. Townsend prepped at American High School, Fremont for Head Baseball Coach Tom Bishofberger.


Moving on with Academic scholarships:

Andrew Ham OF- San Diego State University - Ham had a very good sophomore year. He was voted All Coast Conference South, Honorable Mention for 2008. Academics have always been a huge priority for Ham. He has recently been accepted at San Diego State University. On the field Ham finished second on the team in batting with a .323 average. He had 17 RBI's, 3 doubles and 1 triple. He also had 11 stolen bases. Ham prepped at Washington High School, Fremont for Head Baseball Coach Rob Bobeda.


Nick Colvin RHP - San Francisco State University - Colvin did well in relief for the Renegades in 2008. After attending City College of San Francisco and Canada College his first year and a half of college, he found a home at Ohlone. Colvin had 24 strikeouts in 26 innings pitched. Colvin was able to finish his degree requirements at Ohlone and will attend San Francisco State in the fall and play for Head Baseball Coach Tony Dress. Colvin prepped at Half Moon Bay High School for Head Baseball Coach Tony Magagnini.

Mike Vandenbusch OF - Chico State University- Vandenbusch had a very good year for the Renegades. He finished second in stolen bases with 21. He also batted .299 with 5 doubles and 15 RBI's. Vandenbusch was one of the leaders in the classroom for the Renegades along with a cast of others. He carried a 3.67 GPA for two years at Ohlone. Vandenbusch will be attending Cal State University, Chico in the fall. Vandenbusch prepped at (American High School, Fremont, CA) for Head Baseball Coach Tom Bishofberger.
