Newark students win art scholarships
Submitted By Shirley Sisk
The Tri-Cities League of Volunteers (LOV) and the Newark Arts Council awarded $750 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors in music and photography.
For the first time all of the winners were from Newark Memorial High School.
Kendall Andrews was awarded the $250 Fred Jueneman Music Scholarship. Kendall is the soprano section leader in two advanced choirs and had a lead role as Mary Magdalene in the recent musical "Jesus Christ Superstar." Kendall's interpretive singing of music from "Jekyll and Hyde" and a country style piece enchanted the judges.
The $250 Dan and Marie Archer Scholarship for Photography went to Nicholas Chandler. He submitted 3 photos, all of which were lovely landscapes which developed a mood that stood out among many other fine submissions.
Because of the absolutely incredible artistry of the 3 digital photography submissions of Heather Blakley, the Arts Council judges created a new category, Most Creative Art, for an additional $250 scholarship. Heather submitted 3 photographs that transformed the whole meaning of the works into not only beautiful pictures, but spiritually inspiring images.
The photos of both Nicholas and Heather will be on display at the annual Newark Days Celebration on September 19 - 21. |
