AAUW Fremont Branch Tech Trek Scholarships Awarded
Submitted By Mary Lynn Pelican
Local Fremont students Karina Aranda from St. Joseph's School and Congrui Lin and Monica Oo from Horner Jr. High have been selected by AAUW Fremont Branch to get a preview of college life while learning that math and science can be fun. They have each won an $800 scholarship to attend Tech Trek Science Camp for Girls at Mills College, a summer program for next fall's 8th grade girls. Iman Mojadidi of Peace Terrace Academy was selected as the alternate.
This program is sponsored by the American Association of University Women of California (AAUW-CA). The girls will live on the campus of Mills College for a week this summer. They will attend classes featuring hands-on experiments taught by credentialed middle school teachers. Women who are professionals in the fields of math, science and technology will be guest presenters. Field trips to various locations that correspond to science and math will be highlighted and the featured activities. AAUW volunteers serve as camp directors, nurses, dorm moms, and chaperones.
Students are nominated by their 7th grade math and science teachers to attend this science, math and technology camp. The Fremont Branch of AAUW which serves Fremont, Newark and Union City provides the funding for students through tax deductible donations and fundraisers. Each applicant was asked to submit an essay on how she would use math and science to make the world a better place. Interviews were held, and the final selections were made this week.
The first Tech Trek Summer Camp was held at Stanford University in 1998, with initial funding from the AAUW Educational Foundation. This year there will be six camps, at CSU-Fresno, Mills College, Stanford University, UC-San Diego, UC - Santa Barbara and Whittier College. Tech Trek is continuing proof that AAUW puts their Mission Statement into action: AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research.
