Earth Day Family Fair in Fremont
By Brittney Hansen
The Earth Day Family Fair will be held on Saturday, April 19, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. with over 30 exhibitors as well as hourly raffles and Roadside Arboretum tree giveaways. Enjoy listening to local folksinger Michael McNevin while participating in the Passport Game and crafts hosted by the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse. The purpose of the fair is to raise environmental awareness; "It's to learn about the earth and improve some of the problems," said one of the fair's organizers, Donna Olsen. "There's a lot you can do to learn about how to help the earth, and you can learn while having fun."
The first Earth Day Fair was held in the early 90s, hosted and organized by the City of Fremont. This year's fair was made possible by many volunteers and sponsors who donated time and money, including Tri-city Ecology Center, the cities of Fremont and Union City, BLT Enterprises, Allied Waste, and Assemblymember Alberto Torrico, to name just a few.
Exhibitors at the fair will demonstrate ways to recycle and protect the environment from waste and give practical advice. The City of Fremont will be accepting used household batteries, and the Union Sanitary District will replace old mercury thermometers with new safer digital ones. The One Bear Project will accept your old gently-used teddy bears and restore them for families who will adopt them. The Lions Club will be accepting eyeglasses and hearing aids as well that day, so bring in your used items and become a part of the Earth Day solution for a clean and healthy environment.
The East Bay Depot for Reuse, will be assisting with crafts projects using recycled materials and the Roadside Arboretum, which will be giving away trees; Tri-City Ecology Center along with many other organizations will participate. A school poster contest will display entries. Raffles will be held every hour.
Besides the games, music and learning opportunities, the Earth Day Fair will partner with Rainforest Cafˇ to sell a variety of tasty foods. Lunches are reasonably priced and will be served by Irvington High School students.
