Citizens for Better Community celebrates spring
By Bosky Panjvani
"One Community One Dream" is the theme for Citizens for Better Community (CBC) 16th annual spring celebration on Saturday, March 29. The event will feature a Lion dance and recognize the significance of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. This fundraising event, held each year to benefit local charitable and community programs, offers support to a wide variety of organizations. A partial list of those included in past years: Asian American Donor Program, Feed the Homeless, Fremont Libraries, Fremont Education Foundation, Tri-City Homeless Coalition, Fremont Symphony Orchestra, CBC Youth Internship Program, Ohlone College Foundation, Friends of Children with Special Needs, Washington Hospital Healthcare Foundation, Fremont Chamber of Commerce Gala, Olive Festival, Academy for Chinese Performing Arts, Chinese Language Schools, Fremont's 50th Anniversary Celebration, Rotary International's "Stop Pediatric AIDS Now." The CBC aims to raise $50,000 - $80,000 this year.
This year, Citizen of the Year honors will be awarded to Suzanne Lee Chan, current Fremont planning commissioner and Trustee of the Washington Foundation Board. CBC will present the Volunteer of the Year Award to Nancy Lee and Peggy Chiou. Nancy Lee is a CBC member who works with the Tzu Chi Foundation and the Alameda Library. Peggy Chiou is volunteering for Purple Lotus Temple, Association of Northern California Chinese Schools as a staff member for an activity group, and a Math Olympiad Coordinator at Forest Park Elementary School.
As part of the festivities, finalists will vie for a grand prize of $500 in the "CBC's Got Talent" contest. Judges will be Louise Wu, Miss Chinatown USA 2006, David Sloss, music director and conductor for the Fremont Symphony and Fremont Opera, and Gloria Fuerniss, Woman of the Year recipient for 2005 and Vice President of Fremont Bank. Featured guest for this year's event will be Xiaohong Wang, Chinese swimmer and Silver Medalist of the 1992 Olympics.
In addition, a silent auction, raffle and door prizes will reward attendees. Auction items, include a Yamaha motorcycle, donated by CBC Board member Tim Tran, and a dinner prepared by CBC Vice President and Spring Celebration Co-Chair Lisa Quan, who holds a Grand Diploma from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris in Cuisine and Patisserie.
Dinner will be an Asian fusion experience with flair; it includes grilled flat iron steak with cremini mushroom sauce served with garlic noodles and broccolini flowerets, medallions of braised tofu, shitake mushroom with choy-sum and assorted peppers served with ginger-scented brown rice and mango mousse cake.
