Fashion gets some LOV

By Julie Grabowski

Spring is coming to Newark with runway style and flare. On Sunday, March 30, Tri Cities League of Volunteers (LOV) presents their second annual "LOV Those Fashions" showcasing new spring styles from the Men's Wearhouse and Lane Bryant. The afternoon will include a deluxe buffet luncheon of salmon, chicken, salads and desserts, a silent auction, as well as free drawings for pampering prizes from California Skin Care and Day Spa. Funds raised from this event benefit the Kid's Summer Parks Recreation Program, a free six week session of games, sports, arts and crafts, animal encounters, musical guests and more held at Mayhews Landing Park and Civic Center Park in Newark.

This program is only one of many that LOV nurtures throughout the year. After cutbacks in school funding dealt a blow to the community, LOV was established "to promote volunteerism and enhance the quality of life in the Tri-Cities area of Fremont, Newark, and Union City California, and to meet the needs of youth, senior citizens and the needy." The non-profit agency has been doing just that for almost 30 years, now offering approximately 40 diverse programs such as Toys for Tots collection and distribution, once a month concerts October through May, Spring Break Carnival, arts in schools, and Thanksgiving dinners-- 4,000 of them served last year alone.

"One of the things that is important is that we give people many opportunities to give back," says Executive Director Shirley Sisk. All ages are welcome, and volunteers can choose how they would like to help. Last year 1,100 volunteers performed over 16,000 hours of service throughout the community.

Supporting Sunday's fashion show is another way to lend a hand. And not only will purchasing a ticket benefit LOV's summer program, but this will also provide a rare opportunity to see local community leaders strut their stuff. Among the fashion models will be Chief Demetrious Shaffer of the Newark Fire Department, BART Director Tom Blalock, Washington Hospital Board of Directors member Pat Danielson, Lana Hillary-Windom from the Fremont Chamber of Commerce, LOV president/Packaging Plus Donna Sisk, Garrett Yee of Ohlone College Board of Trustees, Christina Gendreau of the City of Newark, and Superintendent Doug Gephart of Fremont Unified School District.

Last year's event raised $5,000 with 117 people in attendance. Sisk says they hope to fill 150 seats for this year's fundraiser. "We want to see a big crowd so buy a ticket!" LOV Those Fashions is a great opportunity to have some fun, support LOV's fantastic community efforts and give local kids an exciting summer to remember.

Organizers wish to thank the Men's Wearhouse and Lane Bryant for their participation as well as event sponsors California Skin Care and Day Spa; Carol Emmett, Emmett Properties; Ireland Bowens, Redstone Real Estate and Mortgage Co.; Tri-City Voice; and Entourage Hair Design.

Tickets are $45 apiece and can be purchased online at www.lov.org or by calling (510) 793-5683. For those who cannot attend, donations may also be made through these avenues.
