Jesus Christ Superstar
By Anuja Seith
Newark Memorial High School recreates the magic of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's "Jesus Christ Superstar," that chronicles the last seven days in the life of Jesus through the eyes of a disenchanted Judas Iscariot. The student actors bring plenty of energy to this thought provoking and turbulent play. According to drama teacher Steven Harrington, Jesus Christ Superstar reveals the inner dilemma and torment of Judas as he endeavors to understand Jesus, his followers, movement and questions the didactic motives of this prophet he perceives only as human being. "This is a beautiful piece of theatre with an eighteen piece orchestra and awesome sound that has a universal message," says Harrington.
Along with powerful music comes potent stage symbolism; a boat, its mast as the cross for crucification and the sail as a shroud. The stage will also have a wailing wall of Jerusalem and all disciples will wear a jersey with their names and khaki pants to give them a contemporary look and represent a tribal affiliation.
Harrington describes the priest representing the Jewish law as a matrix of characters attired in black and white symbolic of a law that recognizes no color. According to Harrington, the 40 actors in the show present intense performances including Cameron Stele as Jesus, Mike Landreth as Judas and Kendall Andrews as Mary Magdalene. This play offers an entertaining evening full of bold and passionate dramatic performances.
