Fresno edges Ohlone 64-62 in JC playoffs

By Biff Jones

For the Ohlone Renegades' Men's Basketball Team 2007-2008 was a season that started out slowly but ended up with a lot of progress that took them to the "Sweet 16" of the California Community College state playoffs. After finishing in second place in Coast Conference North league play behind only Nor Cal #1 ranked City College of San Francisco, the Renegades won their first round post season game, 70-62, over Coast Conference South Champion, Cabrillo of Aptos. Ohlone then advanced to the Nor Cal finals against Nor Cal #2 ranked Fresno City College only to see their season end in a 64-62 loss on Fresno's home court.

After trailing 36-32 at halftime, the Renegades surged ahead in the second half to lead by three points with five minutes to play. However, they could not hold off the favored Rams of Fresno CC, and though they had a chance to win or tie before the buzzer, they were unable to get off that final shot. Leading scorers for Ohlone were freshman, Chancious Rose with 12 points and James Hancock and Leon Hart (out of Hayward High School) with 11 points. The loss dropped the Renegades overall record to 20-11 for the year.

For Head Coach, John Peterson, 2008-2009 looks very promising as only three sophomores, Jeremiah Cardwell, Nate Liggins and Amarildo Matos will not return. As many as thirteen freshman, counting "red shirts" (players who practiced with the team but did not play), may return. This includes 7'0" University of Rhode Island transfer, Frank Monge, who hails from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Combine these players with the new freshman recruits and possible sophomore transfers, maybe the Renegades can finally win its Jonathan Wallace Memorial Tournament in 2008 and advance to the quarter-finals of the 2009 California Community College State Tournament giving them a chance of bringing home a state championship.

Good luck next year, Renegades and congratulations on a terrific 2007-2008 campaign.
