Math Science Nucleus, a local non-profit educational and research organization serves as a worldwide online science resource center to assist school districts, teachers and administrators. Its mission is to develop problem solving capacity through science for the world's children; it provides a free online reference for science curriculum (including lesson plans, online animated storybooks and slideshows) for elementary age children.

Math Science Nucleus also manages Fremont's Tule Ponds at Tyson Lagoon Wetland Center, a 17-acre natural and constructed wetland combined into a single ecosystem. This area, owned by the Alameda County Flood Control and Water Conservation District, serves as a wildlife sanctuary for many animals and plants.

On Saturday, March 22, Math Science Nucleus is opening Tule Ponds so that families can experience the beginning of spring, how native plants grow, how Fremont water ways are kept clean, why worms are important, and how to identify tadpoles and fresh water microorganisms. The event will run from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Math Science Nucleus staff as well as local high school volunteers will be on hand to guide visitors through five exhibits around the wetlands. Visitors can participate in the Nature Passport Game by visiting each exhibit and earn points that can be "cashed in" for nature prizes.

Math Science Nucleus is expecting approximately 150-200 people to attend this educational family event. Although all are welcome, President of the Math Science Nucleus Board of Directors, Joyce Blueford, PhD, said that children ages three to six years will interact best with the exhibits and educational materials. Strollers are not allowed on the paths. Some parking spots are available on site, but visitors can also park at the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) lots for the event. Math Science Nucleus said they hope to make the Open House an annual event, as long as funding is available. The next Open House will take place in June.
