Olympians at local athletic clinic and social auction
By Justine Yan
James Logan High School's annual Olympians Week begins Tuesday, Feb. 5. The week features elementary and middle school visits by former Olympians and the Willie Davenport Olympians Clinic at the James Logan track on Saturday, Feb. 9. This event is open to the public and allows athletes of all ages and experience levels to "learn by doing."
Amateur athletes will be grouped according to their interests in the triple jump, high jump, pole vaulting, shot put, discus, javelin, sprints, hurdles, and hammer events. Renowned former athletes from the 64' to 88' Olympics and successful coaches of the present will help all participants, whether serious athletes or curious first-timers, learn to improve their physical stamina and further their love for track and field.
The day is anticipated to be packed with athleticism, sportsmanship, plenty of fun, and more than 1500 athletes.
Lee Webb, head coach of the James Logan Colts' track and field team, was pleased to mention two Olympians, including the 68' long jump legend, Bob Beamon, who have recently agreed to attend the clinic as well. Webb said he heard the Olympians have a special surprise in store for the athletes.
The day will close with an Olympians social time from 6 - 9 p.m. at the nearby Union City Crowne Plaza. This chance to "meet and greet" with the Olympians is open to the public and also includes a live auction to benefit the James Logan Track and Field Team. Attendees will have a chance to bid on various sports memorabilia. To view some of the items in the silent auction listed so far, visit www.logantrackandfield.com and click on the "Olympians Week" tab, then scroll to "Auction Items."

You may also sign up for the clinic on the morning of the event. The registration fee for the clinic is $25 and includes a bag, lunch, and insider tips from over 50 world-class athletes and coaches - all that's necessary for a day dedicated to the champions of today and tomorrow.
