Local chefs tuning up their culinary skills for 17th annual Elegant Affaire
Submitted By Shirley Sisk
The Tri-City League of Volunteers (LOV) is holding the 17th annual "Elegant Affaire" on Friday, Feb. 8. It will again be held at the Newark Pavilion where the "hidden chefs" of the Tri-Cities will be serving up a gourmet dining experience for the benefit of LOV's popular Arts in Schools Program, which provides in-school multi-cultural performing arts assemblies to the children of Fremont, Newark and Union City. Last year's glittering event helped provide performances for over 28,000 young people. The need fro this program in schools is very great. The school's requests can be met with the success of this year's "An Elegant Affaire."
The popularity of last year's "LOV Around the World" theme is being repeated again and the celebrity chefs are cooking global with a five course meal to please every travel and food lover's palate. Each delectable course will feature a specialty from a different country. Chinese appetizers will be the specialty of Fremont City Council Member Steve Cho, while Newark City Council Member Ana Apodaca will be presenting Mexican Tortilla Soup. A wonderful Italian tomato and mozzarella salad is the creation of Union City Council Member Richard Valle. The entrŽe is French Chicken Cordon Bleu presented by Newark Unified School District Director of Child Nutrition Dominic Machi. To round out the feast, Eileen McDonald of the Alameda County Board of Education and community volunteer Linda Mapes will be serving All American Fruit Crisp.
These very special recipes from the "celebrity chefs" promise to serve up a fantastic evening of culinary delights- all accompanied by the appropriate fine wines and the specialty coffees of Mission Coffee Roasting Company. Back this year, is the popular tasting from Westover Vineyards. Everyone participating will receive a souvenir port glass and have a dozen different ports to taste during the cocktail hour as well as with desert. There will be complimentary hors-d'oeuvres during the cocktail hour where you will be entertained by popular songstress Jeanette Butler. Besides a fantastic evening of delectable dining, local mayors, school superintendents, school board members, teacher association presidents, and other dignitaries are providing wonderful silent auction baskets.
Post dinner fun commences when MC Newark Mayor David Smith starts auctioning off some fantastic prizes. The evening begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $90 per person, or $720 for a table of eight with table sign and reservations. Reservations are limited to 160. Port tasting is an additional $10 per person.
