New Year's Eve at Cafˇ Momus
Submitted By David Sloss
On New Year's Eve, the Mercedes showroom at Fletcher Jones Motorcars will be transformed into a Parisian cafˇ right out of La Boh¸me, as Fremont Opera celebrates its first birthday. Amid cafˇ tables and extravagant festive dˇcor, guests will enjoy champagne, food, wonderful singing, an exciting auction, and a great band. On display will be a new Mercedes S-550, which one of the lucky auction winners will drive for a week.
A cadre of singers will perform opera arias by request, or lighter fare from operetta and Broadway shows. Among them will be Jane Hammett, well-known to Bay Area audiences for her many roles with San Francisco's Lamplighters, and her four years in the cast of Phantom of the Opera. She will be joined by mezzo-soprano Sonia Gariaeff, recently a resident artist at the San Francisco Opera Center, who has also appeared with Opera San Jose, Portland Opera, Virginia Opera, and American Bach Soloists among many others. At the piano will be Daniel Lockert, who has accompanied Metropolitan Opera singers in recital; has been on the staffs and faculties of the Juilliard School, San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Conservatory, and Aspen Music Festival; and is also an active cabaret pianist and singer, harpsichordist, organist, and music director.
Auctioneer Frank Bizzarro, whose work with hundreds of non-profit organizations since 1984 has been featured in national magazines and on television, will preside over an exciting live auction. Featured auction items include "Drive the S-550 Mercedes for a Week;" a chance to join Fremont Opera's David and Barbara Sloss in box seats at San Francisco Opera with a pre-show brunch and private opera preview; a one-week Mexico cruise; a catered "tapas style" Spanish dinner for eight in your home; and a priceless opportunity to appear on stage in Fremont Opera's next production.
After the auction, the Nichols Party Band will take over. The band features San Francisco-based musicians Jim and Morning Nichols, whose local appearances have included the Black & White Ball, Pacifica Fog Fest, and the Mark Hopkins Hotel. They have opened for Johnny Mathis, Maria Muldaur, Chet Atkins, the Beach Boys and the Smothers Brothers. Jim has appeared at Carnegie Hall and on the Tonight Show, and the Nichols have six CD's to their credit. Their wide repertoire covers the 1930's to the present, and includes Jazz, R&B, Motown, Swing, Big Band, Latin, 60's, 70's, 80's and rock.
And, as the countdown to midnight approaches, the opera chosen for Fremont Opera's next production, in August of 2008, will be announced.
